How to Protect Your Wi-Fi: Tips for Wi-fi Security at Home

< 1 min read

The American home is now an impressive network of semi-smart, entertainment & security devices.  Our identities, finances, and secrets all pass through our home Wi-Fi. Hiding the network name (often called a SSID), changing the default password that comes with your router and using a VPN agent on your computer to protect your traffic to sensitive websites (e.g., your bank) from your home are key and simple steps everyone can take.

Given the proliferation of devices now connected to the internet within our homes, security best practices recommend creating a Guest network on your router.  You then use the Guest network to connect all your IOT devices (e.g., the TV, refrigerator, AC, etc.) to the internet leaving the primary network with separate, long and complex, password for your personal and work computers.

The United States Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) provides invaluable best practice guidance to US businesses and homeowners.  We monitor and leverage these resources in working with our clients.  The following is a link from the US CISA on securing your home router that we think you’ll find useful:  https://www.cisa.gov/audiences/high-risk-communities/projectupskill/module5.
